Forms and structures are investigated as fundamental design relations, especially in architecture and product design. The authors from different disciplines investigate the question of the role of geometry in form creation processes. Traditionally, geometry has the task of making forms ascertainable, describable, representable and realizable, and investigating their rules of creation. Current developments show the use of increasingly complex, irregular and seemingly "non-geometric" shapes. In addition to geometric and topological considerations, system-theoretical considerations and processes of morphogenesis form the basis of the designs. The authors address the relationships between form, structure, and materiality, thus opposing current tendencies of arbitrariness of design. Engineering and artistic-aesthetic design approaches come together. The significance of mathematical-structural and geometric thinking in these complex contexts is examined in a historical context and demonstrated in computer-based work processes in realized examples from practice.
