Relations between view, space and image - perspective as spatial representation and spatial transformation

Perspective as a spatial representation from a certain point of view is the starting point of research that starts with the historical development of perspective. Perspective took its starting point in antiquity with the attempt to geometrically reproduce vision. It tries to simulate the perception of space and can therefore serve as a design tool. In geometry, perspective was understood in the further historical course as a transformation of objects, which made transformations of architectural objects possible from the point of view. The role and meaning of perspective is analyzed using historical examples and at the same time an attempt is made to understand the various aspects of perspective and make them usable for current projects.

This research follows on from the research project on the architectural perspective and its digital preservation in Italy. As an associated member of the Italian research project „Architectural Perspective: Digital Preservation, Content Access and Analytics“ (PRIN 2010-2011, Ministry of Education, University and Research, Italy) there are contacts with the following cooperation partners: Prof. Riccardo Migliari, Sapienza' Università di Roma,  Prof. Michela Rossi, Politecnico di Milano,  Prof. Agostino De Rosa, Università Iuav di Venezia. Through these collaborations, the historical developments in perspective are placed in international contexts and reflected in their respective forms. The complementary research broadened the perspective of current fields of application in architecture.

As part of this research cooperation, Alessio Bortot, doctoral student at the Università Iuav di Venezia, did a three-month research stay in the department of Descriptive Geometry and Perspective at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in the winter semester 2014/2015. He also took part in the research seminar with the exhibition “Blick - Bild - Raum”.

The research on relief perspective as transformations of space, using the example of relief perspective, led to a cultural and intellectual historical analysis of the interaction of concepts in art, scenography, architecture and mathematics.
